1. I came for the language, but I stayed for the students.
2. I am still nervous every time I have a new class.
3. I gauge student understanding partly by whether they laugh at jokes.
4. I love all my students – but some of them are easier to love than others.
5. I’m still learning.

I only got up to 5. Maybe another 5 another day…

I would have to agree with this list.
I too use laughing at jokes as a measure of engagement- especially when working with staff. That and the lack of people looking at their mobile phones 🙂
Thanks for the reminder that lists are great ideas to keep us writing.

Phones are not allowed in our classrooms, thank goodness! We’ve no shortage of students using their electronic dictionaries for unintended purposes though…

I also gauge engagement by the laughs, though I have had some very serious classes that worked hard and focused yet never got my sense of humor. Sometimes very earnest students aren’t a good match for my irony! I also came to teach for something else and I’m still here because of the students. Wonderful list!

Each one of these is so spot on! Especially #4. Each student deserves that love and compassion. It just takes so much energy sometimes! My pride can get in the way too. I just think about their backgrounds and try to understand why they act the way they do… It’s still not easy, but it helps. Great post!
